The Alabama State Lottery was criticized by religious groups who held concerns that a state lottery would exploit the poor. Lottery supporters thought a state lottery would be the only way to improve funding for public education without any new taxes. So far, Alabama will not be joining the other 37 states with state lotteries but Alabamians can play the lottery in neighboring Georgia and Florida.
